Making Sense of MARC: A Practical Introduction for Library Staff Online
THIS EVENT IS OPEN TO ALL NY LIBRARIES FREE OF CHARGE. No payment required.
Audience: Library staff who work with MARC records in any capacity—whether by creating or editing copy catalog records, or by relying on accurate records for searching and collection maintenance. This session is designed for those without formal cataloging training who want a better understanding of how MARC records are designed and function.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Identify the structure and purpose of a MARC record
- Recognize key MARC fields used in copy records
- Describe how information in MARC fields corresponds to elements visible in a library’s catalog
- Interpret bibliographic information from MARC records to verify or correct item details
- Evaluate copy records for completeness and accuracy

Presenter: Allison Sherrick, METRO
Allison Sherrick is the Digital Project and Services Manager at the Metropolitan New York Library Council (METRO). Drawing from 15+ years of cataloging, metadata, and digital collections management, Allison works as part of METRO’s Digital Services Team to extend digitization, metadata, hosting and support services for digital collections and custom digital projects development. She is an active member of the Archipelago Commons open source software team, and specializes in implementing and supporting diverse digital repository configurations and environments.
